Fishing in White County

The area of Alpine Helen has many opportunities for fishing, not just in the city limits of Helen, but also in the immediate surroundings as well.  Helen has many stocked streams and lakes for people to choose from when fishing, the best known is the Chattahoochee River, from which you can fish in the city or have a guided fishing tour.  One can fish trout in the Chattahoochee River, using real or artificial bait, catching up to eight fish a day.

Fishing guides such as Unicoi Outfitters provides a portion of the Chattahoochee that has been closed to the public for several years.  Unicoi Outfitters provides all of the necessary equipment and training to catch the trophy trout in the river.

Besides the Chattahoochee River, you can go to the Unicoi State Park and fish in the lake or creek.  The lake includes a variety of catfish, bluegill and bass, as well as different types of trout.

Anyone can fish in Georgia, under the age of 16 does not require a fishing license, and there are other exclusions listed in the Georgia Sport Fishing Regulations book, found at the Helen Welcome Center.  All that is required to fish in the area for all eligible persons is a Georgia State Fishing License and a Trout Stamp, for those fishing trout.  Betty’s County Store in Helen, the Unicoi State Park outside of Helen, and the Unicoi Outfitters just outside of Helen all have fishing licenses and trout stamps to purchase.  The fishing license can be issued for one day fishing, three day fishing, week fishing, yearly fishing and life-long fishing, all for residents and non-residents.

Copys of the Georgia Fishing Regulations are located at the Helen Welcome Center, and Unicoi State Park.
