Grace Calvary Episcopalian Church - Clarkesville

Grace Calvery Episcopalian Church is the oldest Church Structure in Habersham County.

Grace Calvary was founded in 1838. It was built by Jarvis Van Buren, cousin of President Martin Van Buren. The huge multi-paned windows contain most of the original hand-blown glass. The boxed pews are probably the most distinguishing feature of the interior, and the black walnut Erben organ is the oldest (1848) working pipe organ in Georgia. In the summer of 1950, 20th Century Fox came to the are to film "I'd Climb the Highest Mountain", the story of a Methodist minister’s wife and her struggles to adjust to life in the backwoods. Grace Church was chosen as the location for one of the opening scenes. The film company gave the church a coat of paint for the occasion, which may have saved the life of the old structure by aiding in its preservation
