Saturday, May 02, 2015

The 23rd annual Tour de Cashiers Mountain Cycling Experience will be held on May 2, 2015. Join us for the annual Tour de Cashiers Mountain Cycling Experience to be held on Saturday, May 2nd, 2015 across scenic mountain byways of western North Carolina. The popular pedaling event attracts participants from the southeast, many returning every year for the traditional spring ride, and bragging rights for completing one of the most challenging rides in the nation. Cyclists followone of three routes of up to 100 miles across Jackson, Macon and Transylvania Counties riding steep climbs and fast descents over 10,500 feet-plus of elevation changes. The event offers adventurous athletic challenges suitable for the seasoned to beginner rider. And for all, it's great outdoor recreation amid breathtaking natural scenery featuring granite-faced mountains, flowering valleys and running rivers. This year, the CENTURY RIDE will kick off at 8:00 a.m. (NOTE: NEW TIME) from The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. On-site registration and post-event festivities will be held at the Commons pavilion. METRIC and QUARTER CENTURY RIDERS will leave at 9:00 a.m. Returning riders will be welcomed back at the finish line with a hearty meal, drink and even a hot shower at the nearby Cashiers-Glenville Recreation and Community Centers. Participants also receive a commemorative tee shirt. More than 200 community volunteers will be on hand to help ensure the ride's success. Among those will be a 95-year old, Clark Moore, who gathered a few riders together in front of the Chamber more than two decades ago for the initial ride that would become a yearly tradition. Under the leadership of Dick Zacher and Robert Henderson, Support and Gear (SAG) trackers will follow riders throughout the day to promote their safety and comfort. A contingent of more than 60 parents, teachers and staff from the Summit Charter School will operate four rest stops along the way. Route guidance and emergency medical services will be provided by regional fire departments, rescue squads and other law enforcement agencies. Bring your own fan club of family and friends as there's plenty to do in Cashiers while you're on the road!
